UAE Residence Visa: The 180-Day Limit on Time Outside the Country

A UAE residence visa is cancelled automatically after more than 180 days in a row abroad, unless you belong to an exempt group. Here is how the absence is counted, who is exempt, and how to get back in.

Last verified: October 2026

In short: if you hold a UAE residence visa and stay outside the country for more than 180 days continuously, the visa is cancelled automatically and you need a new entry permit to return. Each trip home resets the count. Golden Visa and Green residence holders are exempt, along with several other groups such as students abroad, people abroad for medical treatment and the foreign wives of Emirati citizens. Residents whose visa lapsed can apply from abroad for a permit to return, at AED 100 for each 30 days of absence.

Limit
No more than 180 days outside the UAE in a row
Counting
One continuous absence; a return to the UAE starts a new count
If exceeded
The residence visa is cancelled automatically
Exempt
Golden Visa and Green residence holders, investors, students abroad, people abroad for treatment, and other listed groups
Getting back
A permit to return, applied for from abroad: AED 100 per 30 days of absence

The rule

The UAE government says that if an expatriate resident lives outside the UAE for more than 180 days continuously, the residence visa is nullified automatically. Three points decide most cases:

Who is exempt

These residents can stay outside the UAE for longer than six months without the visa being cancelled:

How to count it

The rule does not say whether the day you leave or the day you return counts as a day outside. Planning to be back with a margin before 180 days is the safe reading.

Example. You leave Dubai on 1 June 2027. If you are back by 27 November 2027, you are under the limit however the two travel days are counted. A short visit to the UAE before then, even a weekend, ends the absence and starts a new count when you leave again.

If you were away too long

A resident whose visa was cancelled after more than 180 days abroad can apply, from outside the country, for a permit to return. The application has to explain why you stayed away, and the fee is AED 100 for each 30 days, or part of 30 days, spent outside. If it is approved, you have 30 days to enter the UAE. The government notes that this route does not cover residents of Dubai or Golden Visa and Green residence holders, so Dubai residents should check with Dubai's own immigration authority.

Beyond the day count

Your sponsor, whether an employer or a family member, can also cancel a residence visa, and an expired Emirates ID or visa has to be renewed on its own timetable. Days abroad also matter for UAE tax residence, which uses different counts: see the UAE's 183-day tax residency rule.

AtlasDays tracks your time outside the UAE automatically

Log your trips once. The UAE Residence Visa Absence tracker counts the days of your current absence from the UAE, privately on your iPhone, and warns you well before 180. It counts every day that no stay in the UAE touches, so the day you leave and the day you return count as UAE days.

FAQ

How long can a UAE resident stay outside the UAE?

Up to 180 days in a row. After more than 180 days continuously abroad, the residence visa is cancelled automatically, unless you are in an exempt group such as Golden Visa or Green residence holders.

Does a short trip back to the UAE reset the 180 days?

Yes. The rule is about one continuous absence, so entering the UAE ends it. Your next absence starts from zero.

Do Golden Visa holders lose their visa after six months abroad?

No. Golden Visa and Green residence holders are exempt from the 180-day rule.
