Cyprus Citizenship: The Final-Year 90-Day Absence Limit

Up to 90 days abroad can fit within the continuous year of residence before a naturalisation application. The important part is choosing the right year and counting every absence in it.

Last verified: September 2026

In short: For naturalisation based on years of residence, Cyprus requires legal, continuous residence during the 12 months immediately before applying. Absences totalling no more than 90 days do not interrupt that period. This is a total across the final year, not 90 days for each trip, and it does not replace the rest of the citizenship requirements.

The rule

The final year is meant to establish a continuous period of residence in Cyprus. A holiday or family visit abroad does not necessarily break that continuity: the published allowance lets the applicant spend up to 90 days outside the country across that year. The allowance is about absence from Cyprus, while the underlying condition is about legal residence. A complete travel log can support the first question without answering the second.

How to count it

Start with the intended application date and the actual dates of your stays. For the example below, departure and return dates are recorded as days of presence in Cyprus. Check the authority's treatment of any disputed travel day when preparing the application.

  1. Identify the 12-month period immediately before the application and list every absence touching it.
  2. Record your Cyprus stays as well as your overseas trips, so the days of presence and absence can be checked against each other.
  3. For each trip, count only the absent days that fall inside the selected period. Do not include days outside its boundaries.
  4. Add the separate absences and compare the result with 90. Recheck the window if the application date changes.

Example. Consider a final-year record covering the absences below, with departure and return days both recorded in Cyprus:

  • Leave on 1 January 2026 and return on 1 February: 2–31 January gives 30 absent days.
  • Leave on 1 April and return on 2 May: 2 April–1 May gives another 30.
  • Leave on 1 July and return on 1 August: 2–31 July gives another 30.

The total is 30 + 30 + 30 = 90 days. Returning from the last trip on 2 August instead would make the total 91. These figures assume all three absences lie inside the final-year window and that the rest of the record shows presence in Cyprus. They establish the numerical result, not approval of the application.

Beyond the day count

Travel dates do not establish that a residence permit was valid, that the earlier residence requirement was met, or that the applicant satisfies the language, character and other conditions of the relevant route. Keep permit history and the required supporting documents alongside the travel record. The Ministry's M127 guidance should determine which application route and evidence apply.

This is also separate from Cyprus's tax-residency rules. A citizenship absence allowance and a tax-presence test answer different questions. Meeting one should not be read as meeting the other.

AtlasDays keeps your final-year Cyprus absences together

Log your stays once. The Cyprus Citizenship Final-Year Absence preset totals days away across the latest 12 calendar months and shows how much of the 90-day allowance is used. Use that rolling view while planning, then check the application-date record and supporting documents before submitting.

FAQ

Is the allowance 90 days per trip?

No. It is a combined allowance for absences during the final 12-month period. Returning to Cyprus between trips does not reset that total.

Does the count reset on 1 January?

No. The citizenship period is tied to the application date rather than a calendar-year reset.

Does staying within 90 days make me eligible for citizenship?

It addresses the numerical final-year absence condition only. Lawful residence, the earlier qualifying history and the other requirements of the application route must also be satisfied.
